Commission Gives Approval for Ivy Tech Education Degree

March 21, 2006

Bloomington, Indiana-The Indiana Commission for Higher Education has given approval for Ivy Tech Community College - Bloomington to offer an Associate of Science degree in Education with a concentration in Elementary Education. Ivy Tech's Office of Academic Affairs is continuing with preparations to establish the Education Program and it hopes to offer the first program courses in 2007.

The Education degree with a concentration in elementary education will prepare students for careers in education, including teaching paraprofessionals and substitute teachers. The program will also benefit teacher aides who need to complete 60 hours of study as mandated by federal legislation. Students who complete the associate of science degree will be able to transfer to Indiana State University to complete a baccalaureate degree in Elementary Education.

Ivy Tech -Bloomington decided to add the degree in response to local requests for teachers with greater knowledge and experience in math and science. The Bloomington Life Science Initiative has made increasing the number of K-12 educators with math and science expertise a priority, and Ivy Tech will play a role in providing these educators as part of its effort to build a skilled life and health science workforce.

Ivy Tech - Bloomington Chancellor John Whikehart says the Associate of Science in Education degree is yet another avenue for those who want to pursue a degree at Ivy Tech that transfers to a four-year institution. "Ivy Tech Community College can have an immediate impact on changing conditions in the field of education, especially in math and science, with this new degree path. We are very pleased that graduates with this degree will be able to transfer to Indiana State University's Elementary Education baccalaureate program. It is our hope that our local partner at Indiana University - Bloomington will also agree in the very near future to accept this degree for transfer to its School of Education. I am confident that the Indiana Commission for Higher Education and the legislature would view that as a very positive development."

Prospective students wanting more information about the program should call Ivy Tech - Bloomington's Office of Enrollment Services at (812) 330-6350.
