Summer Enrollment Skyrockets
at Ivy Tech-Bloomington

June 19, 2006
Bloomington, Indiana
—Officials at Ivy Tech Community College-Bloomington announced today that enrollment for the summer semester increased substantially from the campus’s 2005 numbers.  Ivy Tech - Bloomington has 1,943 students enrolled for the summer session, representing a 26.8% increase over last summer.  In addition, full-time equivalent (FTE) enrollment climbed 23.2% signifying that Ivy Tech students are taking more courses per semester than in the past.  Both head count and FTE figures are records for the Bloomington campus, and the campus leads the Ivy Tech system in headcount and FTE growth.

John Whikehart, Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana – Bloomington Chancellor, says that the summer increase is reflective of substantial enrollment growth this past year and of what is anticipated for the 2006-2007 academic year. “We have seen double-digit growth now for several semesters, and our summer numbers are an outgrowth of these increases.  The substantial summer increase is also an indication of enrollment growth that we expect to see in the upcoming academic year.  Prospective students continue to realize the value and benefits of a community college including smaller class sizes, transferability and easy access to financial assistance.  We have listened to what students say they need and have worked to provide them with the academic and financial support necessary to succeed.”

The actual number of students on campus this summer is over 2,000 (2,068).  For purposes of consistent measurement, Ivy Tech – Bloomington uses just the paid numbers when reporting its summer enrollment numbers to the media.

For the second year, the Bloomington campus offered its students the option of ten-week, eight-week and two five-week sessions.  In addition, students continued to flock to distance education offerings that are offered by the college.

Ivy Tech-Bloomington expects enrollments to continue to increase, and anticipates that new programs will bring even more students to the community college.  New programs have recently been added in Health Information Technology, Human Services, Kinesiology, Radiation Therapy, Respiratory Care, Biotechnology, Paralegal, Computer Information Technology, and Elementary Education.  Other academic programs offered include:  Accounting, Business Administration, Computer Information Systems, Criminal Justice, Design Technology, Early Childhood Education, Electronics & Computer Technology, General Studies, Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC), Industrial Maintenance, Facilities Maintenance, Nursing (both PN and RN), Office Administration, Paramedic Science, Radiologic Technology and a wide range of general education courses.  Academic skills advancement courses are offered to assist a student’s transition to an academic environment.
