Ivy Tech Launches the Center for Lifelong LearningBloomington, IN—Ivy Tech Community College-Bloomington will unveil the Center for Lifelong Learning during a ceremony on Tuesday, July 31st at the Stone Age Institute. The Center for Lifelong Learning will offer the best opportunities in noncredit learning in the Bloomington area, ranging from cooking courses, to how to plan a perfect wedding, to health and wellness opportunities. Ivy Tech Community College-Bloomington Chancellor John Whikehart said, “At Ivy Tech – Bloomington one of our strategic goals is to foster an educational environment that supports lifelong learning. The Center for Lifelong Learning will be an embodiment of this strategic goal, and we believe that everyone in the communities we serve will find an opportunity that suits them in the Center’s offerings.” In January, Susie Graham, former Executive Vice-President of the Bloomington Board of REALTORS, was appointed as the director of the Center for Lifelong Learning. Since that time, she has been developing noncredit classes that appeal to lifelong learners as well as first-time students. “We have tried to develop a portfolio of courses that are both interesting and new to our area, while maintaining courses that have been popular with our community in the past.” Center for Lifelong Learning opportunities run the gamut, from personal enrichment to career preparation to community interest. A few examples include “How to Cook the Perfect Steak”, “Medicinal Herbs for Healthy Living”, “Beginning Conversational Spanish for Everyday People and Places”, “Relaxation and Healing Through Massage”, “Planning your Perfect Wedding”, an American History series examining the American Revolution, the Civil War and World War II, and computer courses such as “Introduction to Word”, “Meaningful Powerpoint Presentations”, and “Getting Started with Vista.” In addition, over 250 online courses designed to improve workplace skills will be offered by the Center. Ivy Tech-Bloomington will be joining Indiana University’s Continuing Studies, MCCSC Adult Education and the City of Bloomington in a weeklong effort to promote adult learning opportunities in the area. The program entitled the “Week of Lifelong Learning” runs from September 9th through the 15th and will include a discussion about the importance of lifelong learning on September 10th. The discussion features veteran Herald-Times sportswriter Bob Hammel and will be moderated by screenwriter and Bloomington native Angelo Pizzo.
