Ivy Tech enrolls evacuee students

Ivy Tech Bloomington is opening its doors to students whose schooling was interrupted by Hurricane Katrina. Three students from the Gulf Coast have signed up for courses that start later this semester.

"Our goal is to make the transition into our college as seamless as possible," Ivy Tech Chancellor John Whikehart said, adding that faculty and financial aid advisers will get the students into the classroom quickly.

The community college also has Internet courses that could allow National Guard members, military reservists and firefighters to continue school if they're called up to help with hurricane relief.

And it is providing classrooms for the Monroe County Chapter of the American Red Cross to use for training disaster-services and shelter volunteers.
