Bloomington summer institution Picnic with the Pops is back again.
Grab the family, pack a picnic basket and get ready for an evening of great music. Usually held on the Fourth of July, this year’s picnic will be held instead on Saturday, since the actual holiday falls midweek.
The event features a children’s parade, fireworks, a military color guard and salute to our armed forces and appearances by the Rise and Shine Cloggers and soprano Tracy Thomas, in addition to patriotic music performed at the big concert by the Bloomington Pops Orchestra. There will be pre-concert music from the Akento “Spirit of Freedom” Jazz Quintet and the Bloomington Community Band.
Special to this year’s show is an orchestral tribute to the music of the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s, said Pops general manager Kathleen Romy. “People might want to break out their disco shoes,” she said.
Soldiers from the locally based 150th Field Artillery will be on hand to help fire a cannon during the show’s finale, the playing of the 1812 Overture.
“It’s going to be fun, as always,” said Romy.
