Our Goals and Rules
Our goal in Computing Services is to provide each Ivy Tech State College student with the means and opportunity to achieve his or her educational goals.

In doing so, the Computing Services Staff will be happy to assist a student with any technical problems he or she encounters with the computing resources.

Our lab technicians are trained to provide basic help to lab users. They are able to help you start your applications, offer help with printing, restarting computers and applications. They can also provide general information on Windows. Although the Computer Lab is responsible for assisting you in making use of the computing resources on campus, this does not mean that the lab staff may do your homework for you. Our goal is to help you become a more knowledgeable and independent user of computing resources. Lab assistants can provide you with consulting and assistance in a variety of areas. Teaching, however, is the responsibility of your instructor. The lab assistants should not be viewed as a teaching assistant for the particular course you are taking, or for the software application you use to complete your assignments. CTS offers free basic computer classes periodically and other program departments offer classes for the major software applications. The interpretation of assignments is the student’s responsibility. The Lab assistant on duty may or may not be able to assist you with a given problem.

  • Each consultation with a lab assistant may be limited to a 5-minute period.

  • When receiving assistance, you will be advised of methods to use to solve your own problem. The lab assistant will not solve the problem for you.

  • If you continually need consultation or lack an understanding of basic concepts, you will be referred to your instructor for assistance.

  • Clarification of assignments is best done by the instructor, not the lab assistant. Also, it is not the lab assistant's responsibility to redirect you because of errors or omissions in directions provided by your instructor

We strive to provide students and staff with access to computing resources that are in excellent operating condition. In order to do this, certain rules have been established:

  • Due to security and virus issues, connecting personal electronic devices or cabling into the Bloomington campus network ethernet ports is not permitted.

  • No children are permitted in the classrooms or the computer labs. This is a campus-wide policy and applies even on Saturdays.

  • Only covered drinks are allowed in the computer labs. When accidents occur in the labs, it's costly for Ivy Tech State College and the cost is eventually passed on to the student.

  • No swearing or derogatory remarks are permitted in the classrooms or in the computer labs.

  • Printing and/or viewing objectionable material will not be permitted.
