VETERANS EDUCATION BENEFITS
There are several different chapters of veteran education benefits. Eligibility for each chapter is determined by the Department of Veteran Affairs. (link to www.gibill.va.gov)
Ivy Tech Community College-Bloomington certifies students for the following VA Chapters:
Montgomery GI Bill Active Duty (Chapter 30) (link to www.gibill.va.gov/pamphlets/CH30/CH30_Pamphlet_General.html)
This program provides up to 36 months of education benefits. This benefit may be used for degree and certificate programs, and apprenticeship/on-the-job training. Remedial, deficiency, and refresher courses may be approved under certain circumstances. Generally, benefits are payable for 10 years following your release from active duty.
Montgomery GI Bill Selective Reserve/National Guard (Chapter 1606) (link to www.gibill.va.gov/pamphlets/CH1606/CH1606_Pamphlet_General.html)
This program may be available to you if you are a member of the Selected Reserve. The Selected Reserve includes the Army Reserve, Navy Reserve, Air Force Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve and Coast Guard Reserve, and the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard. This benefit may be used for degree and certificate programs, and apprenticeship/on-the-job training. Remedial, deficiency, and refresher courses may be approved under certain circumstances.
Reserve Educational Assistance Program/REAP(Chapter 1607) (link to http://www.gibill.va.gov/pamphlets/CH1607/REAP_FAQ.html)
REAP was established as a part of the Ronald W. Reagan National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2005. It is a new Department of Defense education benefit program designed to provide educational assistance to members of the Reserve components called or ordered to active duty in response to a war or national emergency (contingency operation) as declared by the President or Congress. The Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security will determine who is eligible for this program. The Department of Veterans Affairs will administer the program and pay benefits from funds contributed by Department of Defense.
Dependent/Spouse of Disabled Veteran (Chapter 35) (link to www.gibill.va.gov/pamphlets/CH35/CH35_Pamphlet_General.html)
This program provides education and training opportunities to eligible dependents of certain veterans. The program offers up to 45 months of education benefits. These benefits may be used for degree and certificate programs, apprenticeship, and on-the-job training. Remedial, deficiency, and refresher courses may be approved under certain circumstances.
Veteran Vocational Rehabilitation (Chapter 31) (LINK)
Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment program assists veterans with service- connected disabilities by offering them services and assistance to prepare for, find, and keep suitable employment.
HOW TO GET STARTED
Students must be admitted into a degree or certificate program before benefits can be certified. For assistance with the admissions process, you may contact our recruitment office at 866-477-0700, extension 6350 or send an email to:
The VA Coordinator will provide you with a copy of the VA approved curriculum for your program. It is essential that you have an official approved copy of your curriculum as the VA will only approve for payment courses that are on your approved program list. You will want to obtain this curriculum sheet from the VA Coordinator before you register for classes.
IF YOU HAVE NEVER USED YOUR BENEFITS BEFORE
All new students should meet with the VA Coordinator before enrolling in classes. The VA Coordinators Office is located in the Student Enrollment Services, Room A100.
For Chapters 30, 1606 and 1607
- Complete an application for VA Education Benefits (link to http://vabenefits.vba.va.gov/vonapp/about_vonapp.asp ) or complete the paper application available from the VA Coordinator.
- Submit copies of your DD214, NOBE, and Kicker contracts to the VA Coordinator.
- Copies of active duty orders and discharge orders are required for Chapter 1607.
- Submit a VA Education Worksheet. ( LINK )
- Provide copies of your official college transcripts to the Registrar’s Office.
For Chapter 35
- Complete an application for Dependent/Spouse (link to http://vabenefits.vba.va.gov/vonapp/about_vonapp.asp) or complete the application available from the VA Coordinator.
- Provide copies of your official college transcripts to the Registrar’s Office.
- Submit a VA Education Worksheet. ( LINK )
IF YOU ARE NEW STUDENT BUT HAVE USED YOUR BENEFITS AT ANOTHER SCHOOL
For Chapters 30, 1606 and 1607
- Complete the VA Change of Place or Training Form (link to http://vabenefits.vba.va.gov/vonapp/about_vonapp.asp) or complete the form available from the VA Coordinator.
- Provide your DD214, NOBE and Kicker contract information to the VA Coordinator.
- Copies of active duty orders and discharge orders are required for Chapter 1607.

RETURNING IVY TECH COMMUNITY COLLEGE-BLOOMINGTON STUDENTS
Chapter 31 (New and Returning Students)
The VA Office in Indianapolis will provide the VA Coordinator with an authorization form to complete. You must contact the VA Office in Indianapolis to initiate the process.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS RECEIVING VA BENEFITS
PAYMENT ARRANGEMENTS
Students receiving VA Benefits must make payment arrangements with the Bursar/Business Office. You will be dropped from your courses for non-payment. Receiving VA Benefits does not defer your tuition and fee payments.
RECEIVING YOUR BENEFITS
Most students receive their benefits in monthly installments. It takes the St. Louis Regional Processing Center 4-12 weeks to process your claim.
VERIFYING YOUR ENROLLMENT
Chapters 30, 1606 and 1607 must verify their enrollment status each month. The student is responsible for this action. You can verify on-line on the WAVE program. (link to https://www.gibill.va.gov/wave/default.cfm)
