Mission

  • The Student Leadership Academy (SLA) is intended as an opportunity for each member of the Academy to study and have an experiential opportunity that will involve learning about leadership styles, gaining facilitation skills, presentation skills, and assisting each member to develop his / her own leadership potential.

    The subject areas will include leadership topics, group problem solving, team building, time management, and service learning.

    The Pillars of Leadership that will be discussed include:

    • Leadership of Self
    • Leadership of a Team
    • Leadership of an Organization
    • Leadership in the Community through Civic Engagement
     

Applicants to the SLA must meet the following criteria:

  • Be enrolled in a degree or certificate program and be enrolled in classes during the school year       that he / she is applying for SLA
  • Have a cumulative high school or college GPA of 2.5 or above
  • Demonstrate an interest in current or future student leadership positions on campus
  • Submit an statement and recommendation as per application packet
Provide evidence of the creativity, energy, and vision necessary to assist the College’s furtherance of the mission and pursuit of its goals

Incentive for Student Participation:

  • SLA members are eligible for various scholarships through Ivy Tech Community College - Bloomington. (Students are required to attend at least 80% of SLA meetings and activities).

Meeting Activities:

  • Community Service Project during O'Bannon Institute in April 2008
  • Attendance at various campus functions such as Board of Directors meetings, Ivy Tech Day at the Legislature, Bloomington City Government meetings and more
  • Trust/Leadership Activities
  • Motivational Games
  • Icebreakers
  • Guest Speakers                                                          
  • Open Discussion Opportunities
  • Discussion based on assigned readings

  • Community Leaders
  • Campus Representatives

Costs

Students do not have to pay any costs to be part of the Leadership Academy.  Students are provided with travel, meals and lodging for the college wide meetings.  The campus should provide polo-style shirts with the Student Leadership Academy logo as well as other types of items to build a sense of unity within the organization.
